Typical Tree Surgeon Job Description -

The DTE Academy

If you love the outdoors and the idea of working with nature you may have what it takes to become a Tree Surgeon. Being a Tree Surgeon requires that you be in good shape, have a healthy respect for the natural environment and have no fear of heights. That last one is important, as many would-be tree surgeons discover when they are required to scale large trees during their training.

The Tree Surgeon job description includes the following responsibilities:

  • Tree pruning - Trees need to be cut back for a variety of reasons. In urban environments, they need to be kept clear of power lines and buildings and prevented from intruding on roadways. Homeowners often want trees pruned for aesthetic purposes or to keep branches from overhanging their home.

  • Tree removal - Like all living things trees eventually reach the end of the line and need to be safely removed by the Tree Surgeon. When you consider that there are some 3 billion trees in the UK you can see there will be no shortage of work if you choose this career.

  • Stump removal - Stumps are often left in place after a tree is felled. But at some point, most will need to be removed. This is not an easy task by any measure and requires the expertise of the Tree Surgeon to be done safely and correctly.

  • Root pruning - Tree roots pose an unseen but very real threat to foundations, drains, sewer lines and septic tanks. In some cases, it is necessary for the Tree Surgeon to bring in the heavy equipment, dig down to the roots and cut back root systems.

  • Filing arborist reports - Developers cannot remove trees willy-nilly to suit their needs. In most cases, they need council approval. Local councils rely on Tree Surgeons to assess the situation and determine if a tree needs to be removed.

The job of the Tree Surgeon is an important one that impacts the lives of just about everyone in ways great and small. It’s demanding work but also extremely rewarding. To learn more call DTE on 01959 524 623. Or write to us at enquiries@dtetrees.co.uk.
